Happy to attend my first ‘online’ groundbreaking ceremony today. It was for the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre in Singapore (HMGICS). Set to open in 2022, this facility will be the first of its kind. It will develop automotive technologies, and manufacture electric vehicles to export around the world. This will help steer us towards our goal to have all vehicles run on cleaner energy by 2040.
The HMGICS will also create more jobs for Singaporeans, especially cutting edge roles that will require new skills. COVID-19 has shown the need to integrate technology into more aspects of our lives, whether work or leisure. Climate change, too, is a longer-term issue that we must take action on. The new facility will help us address both issues.
I’m happy to see our relationship with Hyundai deepen. I am confident that Hyundai’s vision and ambition – to push the limits of what is possible – will make this project a success. May this pave the way for deeper partnerships with our friends from Korea!
